No doubt about it, citizens have a voice in local government. What’s more, for every person who speaks at Council, sends an email or writes a letter there are hundreds of volunteers quietly and not so quietly engaged in policy research, advocacy, and just doing work the city and country can’t do.
Once a year the Mayor and Commissioners stop to honor the stars among this group – the individuals who “make Portland shine”. Yep, the Spirit of Portland Awards. Is anything that happens in Council Chambers as important of this?
On Thursday, December 11, thirty organizations and individuals will received Spirit of Portland awards. Six are from Old Town Chinatown, though with influence that expands far beyond: Carl Roberts, Stephen Ying, Street Roots, Sisters of the Road, p:ear, and Northwest Resource Federal Credit Union. Come hear their stories and cheer them on. We need them now more than ever.
